INSURE TALES

The Wai Trail Game
USER MANUAL

Ratnanidhi Charitable Trust

👋 Quick start

This manual explains how to open, play, and deploy the Wai Trail game in classrooms. Tap the ☰ menu at the top right to jump to any section.

1What is the game?

Insure Tales: The Wai Trail is a single-player educational game that teaches students about insurance through gameplay. Players walk along a board of 31 squares — each one a location from the storybook (Pakora Evening, Piggy Bank Bridge, Ganesh Tea Centre, Sankatmochan Hospital, Uncle Keshav's Farm, and so on).

At each square they answer a question, collect Insurance Cards, and face Risk Cards. The player with the most coins at the end becomes the #1 Insurance Ambassador on the leaderboard.

✓ Why this works for learning

• Story-based — every question is tied to a chapter of the book

• Visual — the actual storybook illustrations appear inside questions

• Consequence-driven — a missing Insurance Card means kids LOSE coins when a Risk Card hits, so they viscerally learn why insurance matters

• Competitive — the leaderboard saves top 20 scores, so kids want to play again and improve

• Two difficulty levels — same game scales to Junior (Std 5–7, story analogies) or Senior (Std 8–10, with calculations)

5The 8 characters and their powers

Each character starts the game with a different advantage:

CharacterSpecial power
👨 PapaStarts with ₹250 bonus coins
👩 Mummy RadhikaStarts with ₹250 bonus coins
👦 RajuNeutral — no special power
👧 Meera+30 EXTRA coins on every correct answer
🧔 DeepakStarts with 🛡 Life Insurance card
👩‍🏫 NeetaStarts with 🏥 Health Insurance card

💡 Tip for teachers

Encourage students to play multiple times with different characters. They'll discover that starting with a free Insurance Card (Deepak/Neeta/Keshav/Ramesh) is a different kind of advantage from extra coins (Papa/Mummy/Meera) — this teaches strategy AND demonstrates how insurance protects you up front.

7Scoring rules — how coins work

Every player starts with 100 coins (Papa and Mummy get +250 bonus → 350).

Coin gains and losses

ActionJuniorSenior
Correct answer+100+150
Correct (Meera bonus)+130+180

Risk Card — protected0 lost0 lost
Risk Card — NOT protected−50 to −500−50 to −500
Lucky Risk Card+100 to +250+100 to +250

Where do I see my score?

Your score is shown prominently at the top of the game screen in a big gold pill. Example: 🪙 250

Whenever your coins change:

⚠ Important

• Coins never go below zero. Even if a Risk Card would push you below, your score stays at 0.

• Coins are persistent through the game — they only reset when you start a new game.

• Final coins = your leaderboard score.

8Insurance Cards

This is the heart of the educational mechanic. There are 6 types of Insurance Cards:

CardHow to get itWhat it protects
🛡 LIFE Chapters 2–5 squares Foundation card — collected automatically as you walk through Chapter 1–5 squares
🏥 HEALTH Chapter 7 (Sankatmochan) Hospital admission, family member ill
🪖 MOTOR Chapter 8 (Motor Workshop) Bike accident, car broke down
🏠 PROPERTY Chapter 9 (Ramesh Uncle's Home) House flooding
🧳 TRAVEL Chapter 10 (Train Station) Bag lost on train
🌾 CROP Chapter 11 (Keshav's Farm) Hailstorm hits crop

How do I see my cards?

Your collected Insurance Cards are shown at the top of the game screen, just below your score, in a dashed-border box labelled "Insurance Cards:".

Each card appears as a green pill — for example, 🛡 Life 🏥 Health 🪖 Motor

How are they used?

Cards are used automatically. When you draw a Risk Card, the game checks: do you have the matching Insurance Card?

9Risk Cards

Risk squares (4 of them on the board) draw a random Risk Card. There are 13 possible cards — 10 misfortunes and 3 lucky surprises.

The 10 misfortune cards

CardEffect
🌧 Sudden downpour−₹50 (no protection)
🏍 Bike accident!−₹300 (Motor Insurance protects)
🏥 Hospital admission!−₹500 (Health Insurance protects)
🌊 House flooding!−₹300 (Property Insurance protects)
🧳 Bag lost on train!−₹150 (Travel Insurance protects)
🌾 Hailstorm hits crop!−₹400 (Crop Insurance protects)
⚡ Power cut at homeNo loss — just bad luck
😷 Family member ill−₹80 (Health reduces to −₹20)
🚗 Car broke down!−₹250 (Motor Insurance protects)
📱 Phone broken!−₹200 (no protection card)

The 3 lucky cards

✓ The pedagogical magic

When a Risk Card hits and a student is NOT protected, the modal tells them: "−₹300 coins. (Could have been protected with 🪖 Motor Insurance!)"

Kids learn instantly: "Oh — I should have gotten that Motor Insurance card!" Next time they play, they pay closer attention to collecting all 6 cards. This is the entire point of insurance, demonstrated as gameplay.

10The leaderboard

Who's on the leaderboard?

Every player who finishes a game (reaches the Ambassador's Pledge) is added. The top 20 scores are kept, sorted highest first.

Where are scores saved?

Scores are saved IN THE BROWSER on the device the game is played on (called localStorage). This means:

Rankings & medals

RankMedal & title
#1🥇 "#1 INSURANCE AMBASSADOR!"
#2🥈 "Almost the top!"
#3🥉 "Top 3!"
#4–10🏆 "Top 10!"
#11+🎓 "Great effort!"

How to view the leaderboard anytime

From the title screen, tap the 🏆 Leaderboard button. You'll see the top 10 players on that device.

💡 Teacher tip — class tournament

Designate ONE classroom computer or tablet as the "tournament device". Every student plays on the same device, one after the other. The leaderboard on that device becomes the class ranking. At the end of the week, top 3 students get a small prize or recognition.

11Deploying in schools — 4 ways

Option 1 — USB stick (simplest, works offline)

  1. Copy InsureTales_WaiTrail.html to a USB stick
  2. Plug the USB into a school computer

  3. Share the link via WhatsApp, email, or QR code
  4. Students tap the link and download or open

12Teacher tips

1
Run the game AFTER the storybook session

The game works best when students have already read the chapters being tested. Use it as a reinforcement and assessment tool — not a substitute for the book.

2
Make it a competition — but inclusive

Rotate the "tournament device" so every student gets at least 2 chances to play. Award the top 3 by week — but also give participation certificates to everyone who plays.

3
Use the projector for whole-class play

If you only have one computer + projector: one student plays at the front. The whole class watches and discusses each question before answering. Great for review sessions.

4
Pair players up

Two students share one device, taking turns. Each plays their own character — they compete head-to-head on a single device but track their scores separately.

5
Junior first, Senior later

Even Std 8–10 students benefit from playing Junior mode first to learn the mechanics. Move to Senior mode once they're scoring well in Junior.

6
Send the game to parents too

Share the game with parents via WhatsApp. Encourage them to play it with their children at home — it sparks conversations about real insurance decisions in the family.

7
Reset the leaderboard between classes

For a fresh leaderboard: open the game → press F12 (Developer Tools) → Console tab → type localStorage.clear() → Enter → reload the game.
