Camp For The Disabled – 25.06.14

Camp For The Disabled – 25.06.14

Project Organised by Rotary Club of Bombay – Worli and Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust

On the 25th of June 2014, a camp was held at Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust's permanent center in Mumbai, sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Baldev Krishan Sharma, owner of Marshall Wallpapers on the occasion of their 40th anniversary. They decided that instead of celebrating by giving a lavish party at a hotel, would share their happiness with the disabled by giving them another lease of a better life by providing them with crutches, jaipur foot, calipers and wheelchairs.

They sponsored mobility to 40 patients who needed help. The patients had come from far and wide areas and after they were given the appliances they needed, their happiness was indescribable and they were so thankful. Most of them were orphans who had lost their foot due to various reasons.

For amputees, the Jaipur Foot is a boon and has been found to be the most preferred prosthetic as it is light in weight, fast & easy to fabricate and cost effective. Moreover, Physiotherapy techniques were taught post fitment of Jaipur foot to train the disabled to make use of the aids in an optimum manner.

Other than the Jaipur Foot procedures explained previously, Polio affected children were given Calipers as per their measurements to make them mobile and able to carry on with their day to day lives independently. Wheelchairs were mainly  granted for the old and immobile who are unable to move on their own because of old age, paralysis or other diseases like cerebral palsy. For non critical disability cases, Crutches were given to the physically disabled children and the elderly help them to be mobile.

Mr. Parmeshwaran Pillai  had come all the way from Kerala for this camp to receive a Jaipur foot. He had lost his foot one and a half year ago in a life-threatening accident and was on complete bed rest for the entire time hence was unable to work and earn for his family but now after receiving the Jaipur foot he would be able to work again. This had truly changed his life and he now had an opportunity to lead a better life.

Following is a statistical information about the number of beneficiaries that were handed either mobility, orthopedical products or hearing aids.

Jaipur Foot - 8

Calipers 20

Crutches - 2

Wheelchairs - 10

TOTAL - 40
